The Garden Community
About Us
The Garden Community Preschool was founded in 2004 by Melissa Cady as a small home-based daycare in Concord. What began as an intimate program has grown into a thriving, child-centered preschool rooted in high-quality early childhood education and a deep respect for how young children learn and develop.
From the beginning, our approach has focused on supporting the whole child. Through a play-based, relationship-driven environment, we prioritize social-emotional development, hands-on learning, and meaningful connections—laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
In 2019, The Garden Community Preschool moved into its current location, expanding into a larger preschool setting while continuing the legacy of care established by Eileen Ayala, who operated the site as Building Blocks since 1999. This transition allowed us to grow our program while staying grounded in our core values: community, quality, and a nurturing environment for children and families.
Our commitment to excellence has been recognized through Contra Costa County’s Quality Improvement Initiative, where we earned a Tier 3 rating in our first year of participation—an indicator of a strong, supportive learning environment. As we continue to grow, our goal is to reach the highest level of quality and provide one of the most trusted preschool programs in Contra Costa County.
At The Garden Community Preschool, we believe children learn best through exploration, relationships, and a sense of belonging. We are proud to offer a program where children are supported, challenged, and inspired every day.
Our Philosophy
At The Garden Community Preschool, our philosophy is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, a widely respected model in early childhood education that views children as capable, curious, and active participants in their own learning. As a play-based, Reggio-inspired preschool, we believe that meaningful learning happens through exploration, relationships, and hands-on experiences.
Our teachers carefully observe and follow children’s interests, using them to guide curriculum and project-based learning. This allows us to create engaging, child-led experiences that support development across all areas, including social-emotional growth, language, and early problem-solving skills.
Our classroom environments are intentionally designed to encourage creativity, collaboration, and discovery. Through open-ended materials and thoughtfully prepared spaces, children are invited to explore, express ideas, and build confidence as learners.
By blending a Reggio Emilia–inspired philosophy with a nurturing, play-based preschool environment, we support each child’s individual growth while fostering a strong sense of community and a lifelong love of learning.
Core Values
We view each child as capable, curious, and full of potential.
We hold a strong image of the child as a competent and active participant in their own learning. Children are not passive recipients of information—they are thinkers, problem-solvers, and collaborators who construct knowledge through exploration, relationships, and meaningful experiences. We honor children’s voices, ideas, and interests.
Children’s questions and curiosities are at the center of our play-based, Reggio-inspired curriculum. By following their lead, we create authentic learning experiences that feel relevant, engaging, and deeply meaningful. We see teachers as guides, collaborators, and co-learners.
In our early childhood classrooms, teachers thoughtfully observe, listen, and respond to children’s thinking. Rather than directing learning, they support it—guiding children through inquiry, encouraging deeper understanding, and fostering growth through intentional interactions. We believe learning happens through relationships.
Strong, respectful relationships between children, teachers, and families are the foundation of a high-quality preschool experience. We create a nurturing environment where children feel safe, valued, and connected. We design environments that inspire exploration and discovery.
Our classrooms serve as a “third teacher,” carefully arranged to invite creativity, collaboration, and hands-on learning. Open-ended materials encourage children to express ideas, test theories, and engage in meaningful play.We support the whole child.
Through a balance of play-based learning and intentional teaching, we support development across all domains, including social-emotional growth, language development, and early cognitive skills. We foster a lifelong love of learning.
By nurturing curiosity and encouraging children to ask questions, take risks, and explore the world around them, we help build a strong foundation for future learning in preschool, TK, and beyond.
Safety and Security
At The Garden Community Preschool, creating a safe and secure environment is essential to high-quality early childhood education. We believe that strong, trusting relationships between children, teachers, and peers help children feel emotionally safe—giving them the confidence to explore, express themselves, and engage fully in their learning.
In addition to emotional security, we prioritize physical safety across our preschool environment. Our center is equipped with surveillance cameras, controlled access entry points, and an alarm system to help ensure the safety of all children, families, and staff throughout the day.
By combining a nurturing, relationship-based approach with thoughtful safety measures, we create a preschool environment where children can learn, grow, and thrive with confidence.
Our Community
At The Garden Community Preschool, we believe that early childhood education extends beyond the classroom. Located in Concord, CA, we are proud to be part of the greater East Bay Area and Contra Costa County community, intentionally creating opportunities for children and families to connect with the world around them.
We maintain an ongoing partnership with ZyLand Indoor Playground, offering additional opportunities for active play, social interaction, and community engagement for children in our Concord preschool program. Experiences like these help children build confidence, develop relationships, and explore new environments in a safe and supportive way.
Our on-site community garden is another meaningful part of our program. Through hands-on experiences with planting, caring for, and observing growth, children in our East Bay preschool develop a deeper connection to nature while building responsibility, curiosity, and an appreciation for the environment.
Our commitment to the Contra Costa County community also includes regular outreach efforts. Throughout the year, we organize and participate in toy and clothing drives, support local fundraisers, and host family-centered events such as holiday celebrations and trunk-or-treat. These experiences foster a sense of belonging and help children begin to understand the value of kindness, generosity, and community involvement.
By building strong connections both within our Concord preschool and the surrounding East Bay community, we create a program that feels rooted, supportive, and meaningful for every child and family.
